The director of Dane County’s 911 Center submitted his resignation Friday after coming under criticism in recent months for mishandling a 911 call from UW junior Brittany Zimmermann’s cell phone the day she was killed.
Joe Norwick had served for more than 30 years in the Sheriff’s Department before taking the position at the 911 Center in 2007.
At a press conference shortly after Zimmermann’s homicide, Norwick drew fire after responding to a report that the center had failed to follow up on a “hang-up” call from Zimmermann’s phone hours before she was found dead in her Doty Street home.
At the press conference, Norwick neither admitted the center had made errors nor apologized.
Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk defended him after that press conference, saying he “misspoke” several times and that the dispatcher had made the mistake.
In a statement Friday Falk credited him for initiating a series of technology and infrastructure upgrades to the 911 center.
Dane County Emergency Management Director Kathy Krusiec will take over the spot on an interim basis when Norwick leaves Sept. 19.
